The United States Mint on Thursday officially announced that the release of the 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Set will occur on May 13, 2010, at noon Eastern Time.
The news is not new in the sense that the US Mint has been preparing the release — along with the upcoming silver quarters proof set — for some time. Several days earlier it published the product pages for both sets, and released their images. (It has yet to provide proof images of each 2010 coin.)
The new 25-cent pieces in the set contain the first five from the America the Beautiful Quarters™ Program, which include the:
- 2010-S Hot Springs National Park Quarter
- 2010-S Yellowstone National Park Quarter
- 2010-S Yosemite National Park Quarter
- 2010-S Grand Canyon National Park Quarter
- 2010-S Mount Hood National Forest Site Quarter
Each bears the "S" mint mark, denoting their production at the Mint’s facility in San Francisco.
The clad composition of the coins are the same as their circulating versions — 8.33% nickel with the remaining balance in copper. The difference between the two is the manufacturing process used in producing the proof quarter-dollars, which are the finest quality coins the Mint makes as noted by their mirror-like surface and sharp detail.
When available, the set can be purchased from the US Mint Web site at http://www.usmint.gov. for $14.95, plus $4.95 for shipping and handling. Interested collectors can also call the Mint directly at 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468).
