Only confirming the existence of them earlier this week, the United States Mint has now offered additional details on the debut of the first circulation quality 2012-S America the Beautiful Quarters manufactured at the San Francisco Mint and bearing the "S" mint mark.
In a press release issued on Friday, March 25, 2012, the U.S. Mint indicates that it will offer bags and rolls of 2012-S El Yunque National Forest Quarters beginning on June 21, 2012.
According to the release, 100-coin bags of the 2012-S El Yunque Quarters will be priced at $34.95. This is the same price at which the U.S. Mint currently offers 100-coin bags of circulation quality America the Beautiful Quarters from Philadelphia and from Denver and represents a $9.95 premium above the $25.00 face value of the contents. These coins have a "P" or "D" mint mark.
40-coin rolls of the San Francisco Mint struck El Yunque quarters will also be sold by the bureau for $18.95. This is an $8 premium above the $10 face value of the rolls. In comparison, the U.S. Mint currently offers two-roll sets of America the Beautiful Quarters containing one roll of 40 quarters from the Philadelphia facility and one roll of 40 quarters from the Denver facility for $32.95 (which equates to $16.475 per roll).
The production of circulation quality coins at the San Francisco Mint is a new concept for recent history. Typically, this facility is responsible for striking the proof quality coins of the United States Mint for inclusion in its special annual sets. Circulation quality coins have not been struck in San Francisco since the early 1980’s, although further back in history the facility routinely struck coins for general circulation.
"We were looking for a new numismatic product with an "S" mark," United States Mint Deputy Director Richard A. Peterson stated in a press release. "Feedback we had received from customers was that there was always great anticipation with products bearing the ‘S’ mint mark. We also felt that an ‘S’ mint mark on America the Beautiful Quarters® coins would bring some additional visibility to the program."
While these coins are struck to circulation quality, they will not actually be released into general circulation. Instead, they will only be offered as numismatic products for collectors.
Plans call for San Francisco struck circulating quality coins of the remaining 2012-S America the Beautiful Quarters to be released later in the year. Initial mintage on each coin from the San Francisco Mint was reportedly set at 1.4 million, however the U.S. Mint has indicated this is just an initial mintage with more struck to meet demand, if needed.
Orders for the bags and rolls of the 2012-S El Yunque Quarters will be accepted by the U.S. Mint beginning at Noon (Eastern) on release day. Orders may be placed at the bureau’s online catalog, http://www.usmint.gov/catalog, or at 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468). All orders will be assessed the U.S. Mint’s standard shipping and handling charge of $4.95 per order.
