The 2012 America the Beautiful Quarters Three-Coin Set™ series makes its debut with the pending El Yunque National Forest set honoring the national forest located in Puerto Rico.
The collection is due to be released at Noon (Eastern) on Tuesday, February 7, 2012 for $9.95, plus the U.S. Mint’s standard shipping and handling charge of $4.95 per order.
At $9.95, the set is $5 lower than previous releases in the series which were sold for $14.95 a piece. The U.S. Mint lowered the price on the three-coin sets as part of a series of price adjustments announced last month.
Included as part of this newest set are three collector quality examples of the El Yunque National Forest Quarter struck as part of the Mint’s America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. These three coins include an uncirculated quarter from the United States Mint at Philadelphia, an uncirculated quarter from the United States Mint at Denver and a proof quarter from the United States Mint at San Francisco.
All three coins feature a clad composition identical to the standard circulating quarter dollar composition. As such, they are composed of 8.33% Nickel with the remaining balance of Copper.
The three coins are held in a plastic card illustrated with an image as seen from the national forest. Also included on the card is brief information about the forest, the coins which are struck to be emblematic of it, and a certificate of authenticity.
El Yunque National Forest Quarters showcase a design by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) Master Designer Gary Whitley and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Michael Gaudioso. It depicts a Coqui tree frog sitting on a leaf and a Puerto Rican parrot, both seen in the tropical flora of the region.
Reverse inscriptions include EL YUNQUE, PUERTO RICO, 2012 and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Shown on the obverse is a portrait of George Washington by John Flanagan which is featured on the obverse of all of the America the Beautiful Quarters. Obverse inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and QUARTER DOLLAR.
The El Yunque Quarter marks the eleventh strike to be released as part of the America the Beautiful Quarters series. The program debuted in 2010 and features five new strikes annually as part of it, each featuring a different design emblematic of a different site of national interest from around the United States and its territories.
Collectors can purchase the El Yunque America the Beautiful Quarters Three-Coin Set at the United States Mint website, http://www.usmint.gov/catalog, or by phone at 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468). As previously stated, a $4.95 shipping and handling fee applies to all domestic orders.
