The third 2012-dated strike of the U.S. Mint’s America the Beautiful Quarters® Program takes center stage this week. Beginning on Monday, June 11, 2012, the Acadia National Park Quarter for Maine enters general circulation through the Federal Reserve Bank Services system.
On that same day, the U.S. Mint will begin offering bags and rolls of the America the Beautiful Quarter for sale to the public. On the following day, the 12th, a three-coin set featuring the Acadia quarter will be offered.
The Acadia National Park Quarter, as previously mentioned, is the third 2012 America the Beautiful Quarter and the thirteenth of the series overall. A design on the reverse of the coin is emblematic of Acadia National Park located in the state of Maine.
This design shows a view of Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse along with Acadia’s rough coastline. The image of the lighthouse is surrounded by the inscriptions of ACADIA, MAINE, 2012 and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The reverse was designed by AIP Associate Designer Barbara Fox and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Joseph Menna.
Like all of the other America the Beautiful Quarters, the obverse of this coin shows John Flanagan’s portrait of George Washington. This image of Washington has been used, with minor variations, on circulating quarters since 1932. Obverse inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and QUARTER DOLLAR.
