The fourth 2012-dated release of the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program will occur on Monday, August 27, 2012 with the debut of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Quarters.
These quarter-dollars will begin circulating, having been produced by the United States Mint, sent to Federal Reserve Banks and then delivered around the country to local banks that ordered them. But be warned, banks cannot order quarters by a specific design. Just because Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Quarters are released, do not expect to see them in pocket change any time soon.
The United States Mint offers a solution for those who cannot wait. Also on the 27th, the Mint will begin selling rolls and bags of Hawaiian quarters to the general public. These rolls and bags contain circulating quality quarters struck at the U.S. Mint facilities in Philadelphia or Denver — the two locations typically responsible for striking circulating coins of the United States. Other than the roll and bag packaging holding them, these quarters are identical to the types that will eventually make their way into circulation.
On the same day, special San Francisco minted quarters with an "S" mint mark launch as well. While these are also in circulating quality, they are struck in limited quantities specifically for collectors, and they will not get released into circulation like the aforementioned quarters from Philadelphia and Denver. Until this year, the San Francisco Mint has not produced a circulating quality coin for some 30 years.
Designs of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Quarter
Shown on the reverse of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Quarter is a design emblematic of the national park located on the big island of Hawaii. It depicts an eruption on the east rift of Kilauea Volcano which is located within the park’s boundaries. The design by Charles L. Vickers is surrounded by the inscriptions of HAWAI’I VOLCANOES, HAWAII, 2012 and E PLURIBUS UNUM.
The obverse of each America the Beautiful related coin contains the same portrait. It features a likeness of the first President of the United States, George Washington. The portrait was originally created by John Flanagan for use on the 1932 circulating quarter dollar and has, with minor variations, been featured on quarters ever since. Obverse inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and QUARTER DOLLAR.
2012 P&D Hawaii Volcanoes National Park 100-Coin Bags
As mentioned earlier, "standard" circulating quality Hawaii Volcanoes Quarters in 100-coin bags go on sale beginning at Noon (Eastern) on August 27. Buyers have the choice of coins from the Philadelphia or Denver facility.

The bags are imprinted with U.S. MINT, QUARTERS and $25.00 with a label on each bag containing 2012, AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL QUARTERS PROGRAM and HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK. A letters of ‘P’ or ‘D’ is also found on the label indicative of which facility was responsible for striking them.

Upcoming America the Beautiful Quarter Releases
The America the Beautiful Quarters Program debuted with five 2010-dated strikes. Under the series, five coins are issued annually. Each features a unique reverse design honoring a different site of national interest from around the United States and its territories.
As previously mentioned, the Hawaii Volcanoes Quarter is the fourth of the 2012 America the Beautiful Quarters to appear this year. One more coin will be issued under the program yet this year, the Denali National Park Quarter. The final 2012-dated release of the program will contain a reverse design emblematic of the national park in Alaska.
