The 2012 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set contains all five of the 2012-dated America the Beautiful Quarters® struck from 90% silver instead of the standard clad composition found in typical circulating quarter dollars. The coins of the set come encased in a protective lens to preserve their finish which also allows the holder to view both the obverse and reverse of each included strike.

This release not only marks the first numismatic product to be issued in 2012 by the United States Mint, but it also is appearing much earlier in the year than last year’s set. The 2011 America the Beautiful Quarters made its debut on April 1, 2011 and was offered at the same price point as the new 2012 version.

Included as part of the silver proof set are the following 2012 quarters:

  • El Yunque Quarter representing El Yunque National Forest of Puerto Rico
  • Chaco Culture Quarter representing Chaco Culture National Historical Park of New Mexico
  • Acadia Quarter representing Acadia National Park of Maine
  • Hawaii Volcanoes Quarter representing Hawaii Volcanoes National Park of Hawaii
  • Denali Quarter representing Denali National Park of Alaska

The five above strikes represent the eleventh through fifteenth to be issued in the America the Beautiful Quarters Program as well as the third year of the series which debuted in 2010. The reverse of each coin in the series features a different design emblematic of a selected site of national interest from around the United States and its territories.

Shown on the obverse of each America the Beautiful Coin is the same portrait of George Washington. The image of the first President of the United States was designed by John Flanagan for inclusion on the 1932 circulating quarter dollar and has been used, with minor variations, on the obverse of quarters ever since.

All five coins of the 2012 America the Beautiful Quarters are struck at the U.S. Mint’s facility in San Francisco. Accordingly, each bears the appropriate ‘S’ mintmark on the obverse of the coin. Standard circulating quarter dollars are struck at the Mint’s facilities in either Philadelphia or Denver.

Since each coin of the set is struck from 90% silver, the complete set contains 0.904 ounces of the precious metal. Based on today’s London Fix for Silver of $29.69 an ounce, this set has an approximate melt value of $26.85.

The 2012 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set may be ordered via the United States Mint website at http://www.usmint.gov/ or by calling its toll free telephone number 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468).
