The United States Mint on Friday announced that it will offer the 2011 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set for a price of $41.95. It will be available beginning on April 1, 2011 at 12:00 Eastern Time (ET).
Similar to the "clad" set that was released less than two weeks ago for $14.95, the silver proof sets contain collector versions of this year’s America the Beautiful Quarters®. Each are are minted in San Francisco and each carry the "S" mint mark. Standard circulation quarters found in daily change or produced in either Denver or Philadelphia and have "D" or "P" mint marks.
The difference between the two is that the silver set includes America the Beautiful Quarters struck from 90 percent of the precious metal, which totals up to 0.904 troy ounces. At Friday’s London fix silver price of $37.68 an ounce, the proof set has a melt value of $34.07.
The rising cost of the metal has resulted in recent product price increases. This year’s proof set was originally scheduled to go on sale with a price of $39.95. The United States Mint on March 18 raised its price by $2 to the aforementioned $41.95. Last year’s proof set, which is still available from the Mint, went up from $32.95 to $39.95.
The 2011 quarters in the proof set include:
- 2011 Gettysburg National Military Park Quarter
- 2011 Glacier National Park Quarter
- 2011 Olympic National Park Quarter
- 2011 Vicksburg National Military Park Quarter
- 2011 Chickasaw National Recreation Area Quarter
The quarters honor national parks and national sites that are respectively located within Pennsylvania, Montana, Washington, Mississippi and Oklahoma. They are the second group of five sites to be honored through the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program — a series that will celebrate sites throughout the U.S. and its territories until at least 2021.
As a side note, the same silver quarters may be found in the already released 2011 Silver Proof Set which is listed for a price of $67.95. This set also includes the Roosevelt dime and Kennedy half-dollar minted in 90 percent silver, as well as clad proofs of the Lincoln cent, Jefferson nickel, the Native American $1 coin, and this year’s four Presidential $1 coins.
When available, the America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set may be ordered directly from the United States Mint website at http://www.usmint.gov/ or by calling its toll free telephone number 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468).
